Ingredients:
Horse Gram - 1 Cup
Salt - 1 tsp
Water - 4 to 6 cups
Masala for Rasam/Saaru:
Roast
Onions - 1/2 cup
Garlic - 2 cloves
Fenugreek/Methi seeds - 1 tsp
Dry Red Chillies - 2 or 3
Jeera/Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Coriander Seeds - 1 tsp [or use Cumin Coriander powder instead of Jeera & Coriander seeds ]
Grind along with
Coconut - 1/2 cup
Tamarind pulp - 1 Tbsp or Tamarind concentrate - 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Jaggery - 1 tsp
Cooked Horsegram - 1Tbsp
Temper:
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Dry Red Chillies - 2
Curry Leaves - 2
Oil - 1/2 Tbsp
Method Of Preparation:
Cook horse gram with salt in a pressure cooker till soft with enough water.[around 3 whistles]. Cooked horse gram can be used to make Palya.
Grind items mentioned under roast and grind to a soft paste.
Heat oil in a vessel. When its hot, add mustard seeds. After it splutters, add broken dry red chilli and curry leaves. Fry for 10 seconds.
Add ground masala & fry for 2 minutes. Add the stock [strained water from cooked horse gram].
Let it come to a boil.
This is usually served along with Palya and goes well with Ragi/Jolada Mudde & Rice.
